Building a clothing rack out of wood

Today’s blogpost will show you how you can built a clothing rack by yourself. This one is not too expensive but be prepared to invest a bit of work!

Since the start of the Corona lockdown me and my sister have tried out many ways to occupy ourselves and to use our time to learn something new. This time we decided to go for something a little bit bigger: a clothing rack made out of wood sticks and wool. There were some tricky moments in gathering the wood sticks and transporting them to our house, but in the end this DIY turned out to be affordable, sustainable – and most important – very very pretty.

Step 1: Gather all of the required materials in your living room (or any other space). This is what you will need: Wood sticks (stable ones), Wool in your choice of colour, a saw and bamboo sticks. We also used different tools to cut the bamboo; just use whatever you can find in your house that will not make the sticks break or split.

Step 2: You will start by cutting all of the sticks for the sides in about the same lenght. As you can see on the photos above we left a little access on the top. Just make sure that the ‚crossing point‘ is at the same height for both pairs of sticks, so that afterwards the horizontal stick (the one that the clothes will hang on) will be even.

Step 3: Afterwards you can start to wrap the wool around each stick. Hereby, make sure you secure the ends of your string securely. Now we recommend to get yourself something to drink and put on a nice podcast because wrapping all five sticks might take you a while!

Step 4: After creating the base of our clothing rack we decided to make an additional shoe rack within the space below the clothes. This is where the bamboo sticks come into play: decide the length and width of your rack and then start cutting them into the right shape. To secure our bamboo mat, we made four additional wool covered sticks and knotted them on the outer ends of the mat, just like you can see below.

Step 5: Afterwards it is time to bring everything together. You might need additional helping hands for this, as it is quite difficult holding the loose sticks together in the first place. Then, wrap the wool around the sticks to secure the hole construction. Pull the yarn as tightly as possible to make sure everything is held in place afterwards.

Now, secure the bamboo mat in the foot area using the yarn you have left. And tadaaaaa – you have built your own clothing rack. This DIY is very useful to store clothes, shoes and to make your dad proud that you are able to built your own furniture!
